Phthalates are commonly used as plasticizers which change the appearance and properties of plastics. Phthalate plasticizers are often used to soften polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and can enhance other plastic properties such as flexibility, transparency, durability and longevity. However, due to phthalates toxic properties, children’s toys and consumer products must comply with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).

To meet CPSIA testing requirements, LEGEND offers determination of several common phthalates by Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry in solids and liquids using approved EPA Method 8270D and CPSC-CH-C1001-09.3. These methods determine the presence and concentration of phthalates.

LEGEND is approved to test for lead in paints, surface coatings, children’s and other consumer metal and non-metal products. Analytical methods accredited by A2LA for LEGEND include CPSC-CH-E1001-08.3, CPSC-CH-E1002-08.3 and EPA 6010C.

Analytical results can be reported in either parts per million or percent by weight. See the analytical table for analytes and reporting limits.

Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, more commonly known as California Proposition 65 is a list of chemicals that cause various health effects such as cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. This list of chemicals is updated every year and is publicly available. LEGEND performs analytical testing for various chemical listed in Proposition 65. Of the estimated 900 chemicals, LEGEND is equipped to analyze many of these regulated chemicals in many types of consumer products.
