Stachybotyrs sp. (pictured) typically appears as a sooty, black fungus occasionally accompanied by a thick mass of white mycelia. It thrives on water-damaged, cellulose-rich materials such as drywall, paper, ceiling tiles, and wallpaper. The presence of this fungus in buildings is significant because of the mold's ability to produce mycotoxins.
Exposure to these toxins may cause dermatitis, cough, rhinitis, nose bleeds, a buring sensation in the mouth and nasal passage, cold and flu like symptoms, headache, general malaise, and fever.
There currently are no limits for airborne fungal levels. Data interpretation is based on a review of the building for conditions promoting fungal growth, and a comparison of air quality data inside the building with that detected outside of the building.
